CAKE - Florence's Sad Cake

Florence Comer

This was a favorite of Florence's children, especially Edward. While he was a student at Erskine College the Comers went to visit for a picnic. Florence says, "I got up real early that Sunday baked the cake it came out sad. I cried and cried and cried, I did not have time to make another one so the sad cake with to Due West, SC. With the cake in a Strossner's Bakery box Edward got excited, and I cried again when he discovered that the cake was made by me. But it did not take long for everyone to like the "sad chocolate pound cake". In fact that night he called after taking the remains back to Wiley Hall asking when could I make another "sad cake". I never could make another "sad cake". Here is the recipe - good luck."

1 1/4 cup milk

3 cups sugar

3 cups plain flour (sifted)

1/2 cup Hershey's chocolate

5 eggs

1/2 pound butter

1/2 cup Crisco

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring

Sift 3 times, Cocoa, Flour, Salt and baking powder. Put butter and sugar in bowl and cream with electric mixer. Add small amount of dry ingredients alternating with milk. Add eggs, one at a time, grease and flour tube pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. For the icing, combine 4 tablespoons of water, 4 tablespoons of sugar, 2 squares of Hershy Chocolate and 1 egg. Bring water and sugar to a boil. Just enough to melt sugar. Add chocolate and egg, pour over warm cake.
